Santa Rosa Greenway

Supporters of creating the Southeast Greenway on land previously slated to become an extension of Hwy 12 over Spring Lake are awaiting a vote today by the California Transportation Commission that could finalize the sale of the 49-acre property. The purchase price is listed at $1.8 million dollars. 9 acres will be retained by the state and eventually turned into housing. The 49-acre parcel running from Farmers Lane to Spring Lake Regional Park will eventually have picnic tables, sports courts, ball fields and trails. The sale could be complete in July.


Hwy 37 Closure

State Route 37 will be closed once again this weekend for paving work in the eastbound direction from Sears point to Vallejo starting this Friday night at 10:00pm all the way until Monday morning at 5:00am. Detours are in place using highways 12, 121 and 29.


SSU President Suspended

Sonoma State University President Mike Lee has been placed on administrative leave following a controversial email he sent to students and faculty outlining his concessions to the demands of pro-Palestinian protesters. California State University Chancellor Mildred Garcia posted a message on the CSU website saying the email was sent by Lee without appropriate approval and amounts to insubordination. Dr. Nathan Evans, Chief Academic Officer will serve as Acting President, Garcia's message did not indicate how long Lee's leave will last..


Farming Ballot Measure

Very reluctantly, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors voted to send an initiative to ban factory farming to the November Ballot as Measure J. Board members did not hold back in comments for their disdain for the measure or those supporting it. If approved, it could put up to 60 farms in the county at risk of having to shut down. Supervisors said they would post a letter of opposition on their website within the next two weeks.


SR Shooting

A quiet downtown Santa Rosa neighborhood was stunned Monday night when a 20-year old man was shot to death. Police responded to multiple calls about gunfire on Slater Street a block off of College Ave. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, his name has not been released. Santa Rosa Police have announced an arrest in the case, Diego Kona Kehuna of Elk Grove was taken into custody with the help of Elk Grove police.


Coddingtown

An adult woman shopping at Coddingtown on Monday contacted police to report suspicious, possibly sexually motivated behavior by a man inside the mall. She returned to her vehicle and noticed her driver’s side door handle was coated in what she believed to be bodily fluid, at the same time noticing the same man recording her reaction before leaving in a black Prius. Santa Rosa Police were able to locate the Prius in downtown and arrested 42-year old Joseph Michael Simmons, who previously had been convicted of indecent exposure.


Red Lobster Closed

We have more information this morning on the closed Red Lobster restaurant in Rohnert Park. A notice on the door says it is permanently closed. A liquidation company is conducting an online auction of kitchen equipment of the closed restaurants. TAGeX Brands announced the winner takes all auction for the entire contents of the Rohnert Park restaurant would run through Thursday at 2:30 p.m.


SR Stabbing

An argument between two roommates at a transitional housing unit on Bennett Valley Road early Monday morning led to one man stabbing the other several times. 41-year old Tommy Lewis was arrested for stabbing the other man in the arm and the torso. The wounds were not life-threatening, and the victim was able to walk to a hospital.


Poultry Farm Charges Reduced

Two women had their felony charges from their involvement in a protest at a Petaluma Poultry farm last year...reduced in Sonoma County Superior Court on Monday. According to the Press Democrat, Zoe Rosenberg and Dana Deerbrook both were facing four felony counts and one misdemeanor count related to trespassing and theft at the farm. Now, Roseberg faces a single felony count and Brown's were reduced to a single misdemeanor count by Judge Lynnette Brown.

DUI Guerneville Road Crash

We have information this morning about a crash on Guerneville Road at Laguna Road yesterday that took the life of a female driver. The crash happened about 5:40am when a BMW crossed the center line into the path of a Toyota driven by the female. The driver of the BMW, also a female, survived and was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, where she was later arrested for DUI. Their names have not been released.


Camp Fire Movie

Jamie Lee Curtis is producing a movie starring Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrera that will tell the story of the 2018 Camp Fire. The film is based on the book Paradise: One Town's Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire by Lizzie Johnson. The film is shooting in New Mexico. McConaughey will star as a bus driver and Ferrera as a teacher who together loaded 100 students into cars and busses to escape the fast moving fire.


Mendocino County Arrests

A man and a woman are in jail this morning in Mendocino county following a series of incidents in Leggett and Willits over the weekend. 59-year old Gergory Mark Cox and 42-year old Amanda Dee Chapman first went to a ranch in Leggett where during a botched robbery, they shot a man in his hand. Later, after police put out a description of the truck they were in, it was spotted heading to Willits. After a brief chase, Sheriff's deputies observed the two going in and out of a house until a search warrant was secured, then they arrested the two and searched the home.


Sheep in Petaluma

It was quite the sight in Petaluma Saturday morning when about 65 sheep were herded down East D Street to Steamer Landing during the 6th annual Trans-humance Festival. The sheep are part of a heard of 600 that were grazing at the park acting as wooly lawn mowers. It's an effort by the city to provide a more ecological way to manage grassland.


MLK Jr. Park

The first of 3 community meetings to help re-imagine Martin Luther King Jr. Park in Santa Rosa was held on Saturday. The 5.3 acre park sits southwest of the race track at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds and sees heavy use at it's playground, basketball courts and soccer field. The city has secured $5.4 million dollars for renovation of the park and through a series of meetings is seeking public input on the master plan. The next community meeting will be in August.


Lake Tahoe Full

Lake Tahoe is expected to fill this spring for the first time in nearly five years, thanks to two particularly wet winters. The good news will impact the next several years: When full, the lake provides enough water to meet demand for the next three years. The last time the lake filled up was in June 2019.


Woman Tries to Steal Truck

A woman was arrested Thursday in Duncans Mills after she set three fires and attempted to steal a Fire Chief's pickup truck. The woman says she ran out of gas in Jenner and walked to Duncans Mills, where set fire to a hedge, a garbage can and a wooden container... she told officials she did it to keep warm. Once Monte Rio Fire Protection District arrived, she tried to steal chief Steve Baxman's truck, but was unsuccessful.


Energy Costs Going Up

The California Public Utilities Commission voted to let the state's utilities — including Pacific Gas & Electric — add a fixed charge to people's power bills each month to pay for installing and maintaining the equipment necessary to transmit electricity to homes. For most people, the charge will be $24.15 per month and will take effect starting late next year. Others with lower incomes who are enrolled in one of two discount programs will pay less, either $6 or $12 per month. In exchange for the new charge, the price of electricity will drop by between 5 cents and 7 cents per kilowatt hour.


Naked Burglar

Wednesday afternoon Santa Rosa police were called to Yuba Drive for a report of burglar inside of a home. The homeowners arrived to find a man hiding in a closet wearing a pair of pants belonging to one of the residents. The man left the house and ran, police found him a short time later.... he was now naked and on the roof of a neighbors house. They arrested 45-year old Ronald Rutherford, and were able to return the stolen pants.


Northern Lights

The Northern Lights could be visible over Northern California tonight into early Saturday morning thanks to a massive geomagnetic storm released by the sun. The coronal mass ejection, or CME, was ranked a four out of five. and the strongest in two decades. The best viewing of a possible reddish or green glow would be away from city lights and higher up on mountains, it is also possible that disturbances of the Earth's magnetic field will result in communication disruptions and possible power outages over the weekend,
